Our Journey

Lanka Pharmaceuticals Traders Society Ltd (LPTSL)is the successor to the Pharmaceutical Traders Association of Sri Lanka (PTA).

PTA was established in 14th February 1991 by a group of  “ Proprietor Pharmacists” who own and operate Community Pharmacies.

Initially PTA was focused on negotiating with the Government organizations to remove the Business Turn Tax ( BTT) introduced by the Government and we are successful in obtaining waiver from BTT for Pharmacy Business turn over. Over a period of time, the PTA also involved in training and development of Pharmacists and Pharmacy employees.

PTA assisted a Group of Pharmacists to develop a National Vocational Certification (NVQ) Programme through the Tertiary Vocational Education Commission ( TVEC ) for the experienced Pharmacy Employees under Recognizing Prior Learning ( RPL ) mode.

PTA was registered as a Trade Union at the Ministry of Labour on 18th October 2004 (Reg. No 7404). Later in the year 2017, PTA was renamed as “ Lanka Pharmaceutical Traders Society Ltd” ( LPTSL ) and registered under the Society Ordinance. LPTSL also obtained membership in the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL).

Our Association with FCCISL paved way for our members to take part in Exhibitions, Workshops and B2B meetings locally and in overseas regularly.

Our Objectives

To represent our members’ views at the discussions and meetings represented by the LPTSL.

To encourage the members to adapt to the new Regulations and guidelines issued by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority.

To conduct awareness programme on Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP).

To maintain close links with the government, other related departments, State, Social and Trade organizations for the benefit of our members.

To maintain relationships and exchange ideas with other organizations

To develop a Career Path for the Pharmacy Technicians to qualify as Pharmacist through Apprenticeship system under Master Pharmacist in NMRA Approved Pharmacies.

Message from the President

I’m pleased to send this message for our new website. I have entered into my 40th Year as a pharmacist with 37 years of experience in pharmaceutical supply chain. During this long period of over three decades, I have come across many people of different walks. Specially, Businessmen, Representatives from various Organizations, Government Officials, Professionals, patients and general public. Though everyone of different culture, I have been enjoying working with them as one team to achieve the welfare of the Public. This team work enabled us to advocate, brainstorm and give back to the community while meeting, networking and getting socialized with colleagues all over the country. Despite the differences within us in terms of social, political, technological, scientific, economic etc., we are always there to help our members when they face difficulties in the industry. As significant contributors to the field of pharmaceutical supply chain to uplift the healthcare system with accuracy and efficiency of dispensing medicine, we are always geared to train pharmacy assistants. We are also very well known for our supportive and friendly patient care while managing the businesses, both financials and resources in a very healthy manner for the benefit of our members and the society. There were invertible difficulties in these journeys of 4 decades. So, I would like to thank everyone who initiated to form this organization along with me and for everyone who still contribute a significant amount of their time to this organization. While we fondly remember those who are not among the living today, we wish to extend our sincere gratitude to each one of them for their immense contribution towards a Healthier Sri Lanka.

Message from the General Secretary

It’s my pleasure to send this message for our new website. An “Association “of same minded people is the integral part of development of the industry. We observe, several organizations operating locally and worldwide supporting their “cause”. We the Lanka Pharmaceutical Traders Society Ltd (LPTSL) are one of the oldest trade organization in the Pharmaceutical Industry, established in 1991 in response to the new taxes imposed on retail trade. Since then, we have grown up in numbers and today, we stand firmly as an established organization. The unity and the commitment of our members were well noticed during the COVID pandemic in 2020/2021. Our members adopted to the technology and used every possible way to cater the demands of the patients by providing the essential medicines and other Healthcare products on timely basis. We are confident to march forward to assist the ailing population towards building a healthy nation in the years to come. Yours sincerely in service,
